Last Day of Community Service- "Is it our responsibility to right the wrongs of others?"

This morning was our final day at our community service projects. The majority of the group finished out the week at Dusk to Dawn, while others were with Heal the Hood. At Dusk to Dawn, we finished painting two bedrooms and added colorful decorations. Stephen Townsend built a dog house for the shelter’s two dogs, with scrap wood found in the yard, carpet included! The two dogs were awfully cute, although one certainly had an underbite! In the backyard, we cleaned up the remnants from the burnt garbage and raked the dirt so that the children are able to play safely in the yard. The children ranged from a few months old to fifteen years old. They were all really sweet and eager to play with us. One of the infants had meningitis while another girl is affected by tuberculosis and she is unable to attend school. Samantha grew quite attached to one little girl named Lola, who lived at the shelter because she did not have any family. It was interesting to watch the group interact and work together in order to accomplish a task. Many people assumed certain roles while others were assigned but either way, the goal was achieved. The community service project was a rewarding experience. For the last week, we witnessed such poverty and felt helpless to it. The three days at the shelter made us feel like we were able to help and have an impact on a part of the community that really needed it. The battered women’s shelter is an unfortunate necessity and we were glad we were able to better the situation. Tomorrow, we are on board for an exciting and much needed relaxing day in Stellenbosch. Enjoy our pictures!
